Palestine registers Sputnik Light vaccine

31 May 2021

The Russian single-component vaccine against the coronavirus Sputnik Light has been registered by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) announced.

"The RDIF announces the registration of the Russian single-component vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik Light by the Ministry of Health of the State of Palestine. The Sputnik Light vaccine is the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine," the fund said.

The efficacy of the single-component Sputnik Light vaccine is 79.4% from day 28 after receiving immunization. The effectiveness was calculated based on data from Russians who received only one shot as part of the mass civilian vaccination program and did not receive the second shot for any reason between December 5, 2020, and April 15, 2021. The efficacy rate of about 80% exceeds that of many vaccines that require two shots, the RDIF noted.

"The use of the single-component Sputnik Light vaccine significantly reduces the likelihood of severe cases of disease requiring hospitalization. Thanks to the approval of the drug in Palestine, it will be possible to vaccinate a large number of people in a short time and form population immunity faster," commented Kirill Dmitriev, head of the fund.

The Sputnik V two-component vaccine was registered in Palestine in January of this year. The drug was approved for use under the emergency use authorization (EUA) procedure.

The Sputnik V vaccine has been approved for use in 66 countries with a total population of over 3.2 billion people.
