Palestine voices concern over world's inattention amid Israel's annexation of West Bank

02 August 2023

The Palestinian Ministry of foreign affairs has expressed concern over the lack of sufficient interest from the international community in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the establishment of two independent states. According to the ministry, this lack of attention has allowed Israel to gradually annex the territory of the West Bank into the Jewish state.

The ministry strongly condemned recent operations by Israeli forces in Palestinian settlements and refugee camps, as well as attacks by armed groups of Jewish settlers on Palestinian communities in the West Bank. They also highlighted the arson and destruction of Arab homes, as well as the illegal seizure of land and property belonging to Palestinians. The Palestinian authorities "view these actions as part of a broader policy to marginalize the Palestinian presence in the region and undermine their will to resist occupation and defend themselves."

The Palestinian MFA further asserted that "these actions align with Israel's policy of progressively and continuously annexing the West Bank, with the application of Israeli legislation on a significant portion of the territory." This, in turn, poses a serious obstacle to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The ministry believes that "the silence of the world community regarding Israel's violations of international law reflects a practice of double standards and a lack of seriousness in upholding the rights of the Palestinian people and achieving a political settlement to the conflict based on the establishment of two independent states."
