The Palestinian MFA has demanded that the UN Security Council implement a resolution that rejects Israel's right to East Jerusalem. A statement to this effect was published on the Palestinian MFA website.
"The ministry calls on the UN Security Council to respect its own resolutions recognizing Jerusalem as an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory," the statement said.
Israeli authorities have been conducting large-scale security operations in the West Bank since April 10 in response to a series of terrorist attacks that killed 14 people in Israel. In addition, the situation escalated late last week on the Temple Mount, where Palestinians clashed with Israeli police officers.
Israel declared Jerusalem its capital in January 1950 and moved state institutions to its western part, and on July 30, 1980, called Jerusalem its "one and indivisible capital." The UN Security Council rejected Israel's right to East Jerusalem and called on UN member states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city (resolution 478 of August 20, 1980).
