Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi are set to participate in a videoconference ceremony on January 23 to mark the commencement of pouring concrete into the foundation of the fourth power unit at Egypt's El Dabaa nuclear power plant, as reported by the Kremlin press service.
Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, previously confirmed Putin and el-Sisi's participation in this significant event.
The pouring of concrete for the fourth unit marks the conclusion of the preparatory phase and the transition to the primary stage of constructing all units at the El Dabaa NPP.
In October of the previous year, Putin noted that the construction of the fourth unit by Russian specialists was ahead of schedule. He emphasized that this flagship project in Africa is not limited to the construction of the plant; Russia, in collaboration with Egyptian specialists, is establishing an entire industry from scratch.
Situated in Matrouh province on the Mediterranean Sea's shores, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo, El Dabaa is Egypt's inaugural nuclear power plant, a project undertaken by Rosatom. The project involves the construction of four units with VVER-1200 reactors, and Rosatom will supply nuclear fuel throughout the plant's 60-year lifecycle. The corporation will also provide training, maintenance, and repair services for 10 years following the startup of each unit. The contract includes the construction of the first module of dry containerized storage for spent nuclear fuel by 2028. Egypt anticipates the nuclear power plant to reach full capacity by 2030.
