Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan held telephone talks, during which they expressed deep concern about the ongoing large-scale fighting in Libya. the Kremlin's press service reports.
"During a thorough discussion of the situation in Libya, the parties expressed deep concern about the ongoing large-scale clashes in the country, which led to numerous victims and destruction," the message reads.
"Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of an early ceasefire and the resumption of inter-Libyan dialogue based on the decisions of the Berlin international conference on January 19, approved by the UN Security Council resolution 2510, and other initiatives aimed at a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict," the Kremlin added.
Another topic of discussion was Syria. Among the priorities, the leaders of the two countries called monitoring compliance with the truce in Idlib and neutralizing militants.
"The situation in the Syrian Arab Republic was also touched upon. The need to step up efforts to implement the Russian-Turkish agreements on the Idlib de-escalation zone, including the additional Protocol to the Sochi Memorandum of September 17, 2018, adopted in Moscow on March 5, was emphasized. Among the priority joint tasks is to monitor compliance with the truce and neutralize the terrorists operating in Idlib," the statement of the Russian leader's press service reads.
Putin and Erdogan stressed the importance of gradually restoring full bilateral relations.
"The topical aspects of countering the coronavirus pandemic were discussed. The importance of gradual restoration of bilateral trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties in full as the restrictive measures are lifted," the Kremlin noted.
"The heads of states exchanged congratulations on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Turkey (June 3, 1920). The two sides confirmed their mutual commitment to further development of mutually beneficial partnership," the statement reads.
