Russia will continue its mediation efforts to ensure stability in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the Kremlin press service following Thursday's telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
"During the exchange of views on Nagorno-Karabakh, the importance of consistent implementation of the agreements of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan of November 9, 2020, and January 11 this year was stressed. The Russian side will continue active mediation efforts aimed at ensuring stability in the region," the statement said.
In turn, the press service of the Armenian Cabinet of Ministers also reported that the two leaders discussed the implementation of the Karabakh agreements. "In this context, Armenia's acting prime minister stressed the paramount importance of the return of prisoners of war," the press service of the Armenian cabinet said in a statement.
The leaders agreed on further personal contacts, the Kremlin said.
On Wednesday, June 23, Putin also discussed the topic of Nagorno-Karabakh in a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27 last year and active hostilities broke out there. On November 9, Putin, Aliyev and Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the full cessation of hostilities in Karabakh. According to the document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides halted at occupied positions, then a number of areas, including Kelbajar, came under Baku's control, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor.
