Russian and Iranian presidents Vladimir Putin and Hassan Rouhani expressed a mutual desire for close coordination to achieve long-term peace in Syria. According to the Kremlin's press service, the two presidents raised this issue during a telephone conversation.
"The parties expressed a mutual desire for further close coordination in order to achieve long-term peace and improve the humanitarian situation in the Syrian Arab Republic," the message reads.
When exchanging views on the situation in Syria, Putin and Rouhani "noted the timeliness of decisions on the results of the trilateral videoconference of the heads of state guarantors of the Astana process, organized on July 1, 2020, at the initiative of the Iranian side."
In a telephone conversation initiated by the Iranian side, the presidents also touched upon "a number of topical issues on the bilateral agenda, including the implementation of major joint projects in the energy sector."
In addition, the President of Iran congratulated Putin on the success of the all-Russian vote on approving changes to the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
"They have agreed on further contacts at various levels," the Kremlin concluded.
Commitment to the nuclear deal
Rouhani confirmed Tehran's commitment to the Iran nuclear deal.
"Various aspects of the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA) were discussed in detail. <...> Hassan Rouhani confirmed Iran's commitment to the JCPOA and readiness for equal and constructive interaction with all its participants, as well as within the framework of the IAEA," the message reads. The Kremlin press service noted that the Iranian President also thanked Putin "for the consistent Russian position in favor of preserving and implementing the nuclear agreement."
In turn, the Russian leader stressed that " the JCPOA remains an important agreement that contributes to global stability and security."
On July 20, 2015, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the plan of action for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program, which limited Tehran's nuclear development exclusively to civilian purposes. In May 2018, the US withdrew from the JCPOA and restored economic sanctions against Tehran, including in the sphere of oil exports.

"Hassan Rouhani and Vladimir Putin informed each other about the measures taken to counteract the spread of the coronavirus infection. It was agreed to continue cooperation in the fight against the pandemic, including through the ministries of health," the message reads.
