Putin calls relations between Russia and Turkmenistan strategic

10 June 2022

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin  at a meeting with his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov in the Kremlin said that relations between the two countries are truly strategic.

"We are developing relations in all directions, and it is very pleasant to note that they are, indeed, not formally, but in fact, strategic," Putin said. He reminded that the countries recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

"Today we will also sign a very important document concerning the development of our relations," the Russian leader added. He pointed out that during Berdimuhamedov's visit  "a very big job" is being done.

"I am sure that in addition to the declaration we are signing today, this whole complex of work together, it will certainly benefit the development of our relations," Putin concluded.

He recalled that during the pandemic year, trade turnover between the two states decreased slightly. "But today, despite all the external difficulties, there is  an increase - more than 40% - for the first quarter [of 2022]  and this is a very serious movement forward," summed up the Russian president.
