Russia will continue to assist in reaching an agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia on the beginning of delimitation and demarcation of the border, the Kremlin press service reported following Wednesday's telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Among the topics the leaders discussed were the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh and the incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. "The general attitude is that the settlement should be carried out exclusively by political and diplomatic methods," the Kremlin noted.

"The Russian side will continue mediation efforts and advisory assistance aimed at reaching an agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia to launch the process of delimitation and demarcation of the state border," the statement said.

In addition, according to the press service, the two leaders continued to discuss the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh "with a focus on the solution of practical tasks to ensure security and stability in the region in full compliance with the letter and spirit of the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, and January 11 this year."

After the end of military operations in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone last fall, when seven districts adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh came under Baku's control, Armenia's border with Azerbaijan was placed directly next to the Syunik and Gegharkunik regions.

On May 12, the Armenian Defense Ministry reported that in the early hours of the morning, Azerbaijani armed forces attempted to conduct "certain works" in one of the border districts of the Syunik region in order to "adjust the border." Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described the events as an encroachment on the country's territory. In its turn, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said the country's troops are moving "on the positions belonging to Azerbaijan".

Vaccine supplies

Putin and Aliyev also exchanged views on key issues on the bilateral agenda. The Azerbaijani leader expressed his sincere gratitude for the ongoing supplies of Russian vaccines.

"An exchange of views on the key aspects of the bilateral agenda was held," the report reads. - "Ilham Aliyev expressed his sincere gratitude for the ongoing supply of Russian vaccines".

It is noted that the leaders expressed mutual interest in deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in all directions. "Intensive contacts on the lines of governments, profile ministries and agencies will be aimed at this," the Kremlin summarized.
