Putin discussed the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border with the Security Council

Russian President Vladimir Putin and permanent members of the Russian Security Council discussed the situation on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, noting Moscow's readiness to mediate, presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said after the meeting held in a video link.


"There was a detailed exchange of views on the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border," he said.


"The parties expressed extreme concern in connection with the ongoing escalation, and stressed the urgent need for the parties to ensure a ceasefire, as well as readiness for mediation," Peskov said.


The President also informed the permanent members of the Security Council about a series of recent telephone contacts he had with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed al Nahyan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.


The meeting was attended by speakers of both houses of Parliament - Valentina Matvienko and Vyacheslav Volodin, Deputy head of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, head of the Kremlin administration Anton Vaino, Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, Interior and Foreign Ministers Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Sergey Lavrov, heads of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov and SVR Sergey Naryshkin, as well as special representative of the President for environmental protection, ecology and transport Sergey Ivanov.
