Putin Emphasizes Syrians Should Determine Their Own Country's Future

04 September 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin firmly believes that the future of Syria should be determined by its citizens themselves. He emphasized that no "predefined solutions or models" should be imposed on Syria by external states.

"It is essential that we align on fundamental principles for resolving the Syrian crisis, such as upholding the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the country," stated the Russian President during a press conference following his discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We recognize the importance of attaining national reconciliation and consensus to initiate comprehensive reconstruction within the country. We firmly believe that the future of Syria should be determined by the Syrian people themselves, free from the imposition of predefined solutions or external models," emphasized Putin.

Putin also mentioned that he and Erdogan had discussed the Syrian conflict during their talks. "We highly value our collaboration with the Republic of Turkey in this regard. Specifically, we engage constructively within the Astana format, which is by far the most effective international consultation mechanism for addressing the Syrian situation," stated the Russian president.

"During our discussion of the situation in Libya, we reaffirmed our dedication to achieving a comprehensive resolution to the longstanding crisis in the country through negotiations and a quest for compromises. We aim to prevent further outbreaks of violence and the disintegration of the Libyan state," Putin emphasized.
