Putin Expresses High Expectations for Belt and Road Forum

16 October 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin anticipates that his upcoming participation in the Belt and Road forum in Beijing will be highly productive.

"It might be premature to make definitive statements, but I'm confident that we'll witness the signing of contracts, the forging of new connections among economic participants, and valuable meetings between government leaders and various ministry and agency heads who are directly involved," he stated in an interview with the China Media Corporation, responding to inquiries about his expectations for the forum. The complete interview is available on the Kremlin's website.

Putin has reviewed the Russian government's proposals across various domains, "which are detailed across multiple sheets of paper in standard font." He noted that each project could encompass long-term efforts spanning more than a year, possibly even a decade ahead. As a result, he holds high expectations for his interactions with fellow leaders.

The Third International Belt and Road Forum is scheduled to take place in Beijing from October 17 to 18, and the Russian president intends to participate. Additionally, the Kremlin anticipates that Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will find time for private, face-to-face discussions. The Belt and Road initiative, introduced by Xi Jinping in 2013, aims to promote international, multilateral trade and investment projects involving interested countries and utilizing both Chinese and foreign capital. To date, more than 150 nations and over 30 international organizations have joined this initiative.
