Putin Named Integration of New Members into BRICS as One of Russia's Chairmanship Goals

15 May

The organic integration of new members into BRICS is a key goal of Russia's chairmanship in the association in 2024, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with Xinhua, the text of which was published on the Kremlin’s website, Putin emphasized the importance of integrating new members into the established network of BRICS cooperation mechanisms.

"Undoubtedly, one of the main goals of Russia's chairmanship is the organic integration of new members into BRICS. We actively assist them in integrating into the established network of cooperation mechanisms," Putin stated.

Another priority for Russia's chairmanship, according to Putin, is to continue coordinated efforts to enhance the association's authority in global affairs and its capability to promote a more democratic, sustainable, and fair system of international relations. Putin highlighted that "BRICS cooperation is built on principles of mutual respect, equality, openness, and consensus, making it attractive to countries in the Global South and East, which see BRICS as a platform where their voices will be heard and considered."

Putin noted that Russian agencies, businesses, and public circles have prepared a comprehensive agenda for the chairmanship, covering a wide range of areas including finance, agriculture, energy, intellectual property, healthcare, education, and space. Specialized experts are also discussing science-intensive topics such as nanotechnology, nuclear medicine, and biotechnology.

The Russian leader recalled that many specialized events have already taken place under Russia's chairmanship, with over 200 events planned in total. These include expert and ministerial meetings, as well as numerous cultural events and youth activities. Notably, the BRICS Games will be held in Kazan in June, followed by the BRICS summit in October.

About the association

BRICS was founded in 2006 and has since expanded twice. South Africa joined the original group of Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2011. In August 2023, six new members were invited to join the association, with Argentina later declining membership at the end of December. The five new members—Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia—began full-fledged participation in BRICS under Russia's chairmanship on January 1, 2024.
