Russia is determined to develop friendly relations with Palestine and is ready to continue supporting the Palestinians in solving socio-economic issues. This is stated in the congratulatory telegram of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was read by Advisor to the Department of Middle East and North Africa of the Russian Foreign Ministry Yevgeny Shcherbanev on Monday at an online conference on the situation around Palestine.
"I would like to confirm the Russian side's commitment to the further development of friendly relations with Palestine, constructive bilateral cooperation in various areas," the President said. - We are ready to continue providing assistance to Palestinian partners in addressing pressing issues of socio-economic development, as well as in combating the coronavirus pandemic".
The telegram emphasizes that Russia consistently supports Palestinians in their right to establish a viable state that would live in peace with its neighbors.
"We welcome efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and long-term Middle East settlement on an international legal basis. In this context, we support the line to ensure direct Palestinian-Israeli dialogue, as well as to ensure inter-Palestinian reconciliation," Putin said.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is celebrated on November 29. It was established by the UN General Assembly on December 2, 1977. The date of November 29 was chosen due to the fact that on this day in 1947 the UN General Assembly adopted one of the key documents of the Palestinian-Israeli settlement - the resolution on the division of Palestine. It provided for the establishment of two independent states on the territory of Palestine - Arab and Jewish, and also established a special international status for Jerusalem.
