25 August 2023

Doha is anticipating that the prisoner swap agreement mediated by Qatar will serve as a catalyst for renewed talks between the United States and Iran regarding the reinstatement of the nuclear deal. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani, Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, conveyed this expectation during a Raffles Lecture event hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore.

"We have assumed a pivotal role as a mediator between Iran and the US in brokering the prisoner exchange agreement, and we are hopeful that this development will pave the way for broader discussions concerning the nuclear deal," remarked the prime minister. His remarks were broadcasted by Al Jazeera. In light of this context, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that Qatar's foreign policy is anchored in the aspiration to resolve disparities between nations in addition to embracing a multi-faceted approach when engaging with its allies.
