The authorities of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) decided to restore diplomatic relations, the embassies and consulates of the two countries will start working on Monday, June 19, Qatar's foreign ministry reported.
"Based on the AlUla agreement and an aspiration of both countries to strengthen bilateral relations, Qatar and the UAE announce the restoration of diplomatic relations with the reopening of Qatar's embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai as well as the UAE embassy in Doha on Monday, June 19, 2023," a statement posted on the emirate's foreign ministry's Twitter page reads.
"The two sides underline that this step comes as an embodiment of the will of the leadership of the two countries and [aims] to strengthen joint Arab work in order to achieve the aspirations of the two brotherly peoples," the statement stressed.
In June 2017, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen announced that they had severed diplomatic relations with Qatar. The main reason for this decision was given as the destabilizing role of Qatar and the emirate's support of extremist ideology as well as groups operating in the region. Doha called these allegations unsubstantiated.
In January 2021, at the summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the Saudi city of AlUla, the Arabian monarchies and Egypt signed an agreement to end all disagreements with Qatar, restore full diplomatic relations with it, as well as to lift the transport blockade. However, not all countries agreed to normalize relations with Doha. On April 13, 2023, the foreign ministry of Qatar reported that an agreement had been reached with the Bahraini side to restore relations.
