Qatari Foreign Ministry: External Intervention in Gaza Conflict Will Only Worsen the Situation

11 December 2023

Qatari authorities urge external forces to avoid worsening the situation in the Gaza Strip, aiming to facilitate Doha's mediation efforts and contribute to resolving the conflict. This statement was made by Mohamed al-Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Qatari Foreign Ministry.

"It is crucial; we have emphasized this message strongly: any force escalating the situation will complicate the mediation role and the resolution of this issue," he stated at the Doha Forum. "This includes a call for other regional or international forces not to escalate tensions but to contribute to de-escalation," added al-Khulaifi.

Since the start of the conflict escalation in the Gaza Strip, a dedicated working group on the enclave's situation was established in Qatar's Foreign Ministry, stated the state minister. "One of the primary objectives of this group is to collaborate with the international community, ensuring the conflict remains contained," continued al-Khulaifi. He added that Doha maintains contact with all relevant parties.

On November 22, the Palestinian movement Hamas announced that it had reached an agreement with Israel, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar, for a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, effective from November 24. The accord aimed to secure the release of children and women held in the enclave, reciprocated by the release of Palestinian children and women from Israeli prisons. However, on the morning of December 1, the Israeli army accused Hamas of violating the truce, leading to the announcement of the resumption of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
