Rudenko says Russia has no preconditions for talks with Ukraine

08 November 2022

Russia does not set any preconditions for peace talks with Ukraine, but Kiev must show its will to the process, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko told reporters on Tuesday.

"There are no preconditions from our side, except the main condition - that Ukraine should show its good will," he said, answering a related question.

The deputy minister stressed that Russia has always indicated its readiness to conduct such negotiations. "Ukraine passed a law that forbids it to negotiate peacefully with Russia. This is their choice. We have always stated our readiness for such negotiations, which were interrupted through no fault of ours," Rudenko concluded.

He also said that the negotiations on the protection zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) have been continued. According to the deputy foreign minister, the competent authorities of the Russian Federation are studying the proposals of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"Negotiations are still going on. We have proposals from the IAEA, they are being studied by our competent authorities," he told reporters.

According to the diplomat, Russia and the US are not negotiating on the topic of Ukraine.

"No, we are not," he said in response to a related question from TASS.
