During a visit by a Russian delegation to Damascus, Russia and Syria reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation based on principles of friendship, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"On January 28, an official Russian interagency delegation, led by Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, visited Damascus for the first time since the change of power in the Syrian Arab Republic," the statement said. "The delegation was received by the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and held detailed discussions with him, joined by members of Syria’s interim government, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and Health Minister Maher al-Sharaa."
During "a frank discussion on the full spectrum of Russian-Syrian relations at this pivotal stage," both sides emphasized their intention to continue developing multifaceted bilateral cooperation based on "traditional friendship and mutual respect between Russia and Syria."
The Russian side reaffirmed its unwavering support for Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, as well as its readiness to assist the Syrian people in post-crisis reconstruction efforts.
Additionally, the Russian Foreign Ministry underscored the importance of Syrians resolving their internal issues independently through a sustainable political process, ensuring inclusive dialogue that involves all political forces and ethno-religious groups within the country.
"It was agreed to continue bilateral contacts to achieve relevant agreements aimed at further strengthening multifaceted ties and mutual understanding between Moscow and Damascus, including in foreign policy matters," the statement concluded.
