16 July 2020

Russia calls on the parties to the conflict in Libya to prevent a new round of escalation and immediately cease fire, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.

"We call on the warring Libyan camps to prevent a new round of escalation of the situation, for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire. And, of course, to launch an inclusive political dialogue based on UN Security Council resolutions," Zakharova said during a weekly briefing.

According to the diplomat, the situation on the ground remains tense, and according to some reports, "the warring Libyan sides just took a pause to regroup forces to resume armed confrontation."

The threat of internationalization of the conflict in Libya

The lack of a lasting peace in Libya is fraught with further destruction of the socio-economic infrastructure of this country, in addition, the threat of further internationalization of the Libyan conflict is growing, Zakharova said.

"It is fraught with new victims among the population, further destruction of economic and social infrastructure, the threat and further internationalization of the conflict", - said Zakharov, Recalling the recent decision of the house of representatives (Parliament of Libya, ruling in the East) to authorize the participation of the armed forces of Egypt in the Libyan conflict.

The house of representatives of Libya, led by Aguila Saleh, on Tuesday night allowed the Egyptian armed forces to intervene in the situation in Libya. In a statement, the Parliament said that Egypt had the right to intervene to protect the Libyan and Egyptian national security if it saw an imminent threat to the security of the two countries.

In Libya, a standoff continues between the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Fayez Sarraj, which controls Tripoli and territories in the West of the country, and the LNA under the command of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, which cooperates with the Parliament sitting in the East. The GNA is supported by Turkey, while the LNA is supported by Egypt.
