Moscow expresses its deep condolences to Baghdad over the victims of the fire at a hospital for those infected with the coronavirus infection and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured. This was said in a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday.

‘We express our deep condolences to the leadership and people of friendly Iraq and convey our words of sincere compassion and support to the families and friends of the victims. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured’, the document says.

On Saturday, an explosion occurred in an oxygen cylinder storage room on the first floor of the hospital in Baghdad, which houses an intensive care unit for critically ill people with lung lesions. The ensuing fire instantly engulfed the two-storey complex, which burned almost completely. Official figures from the Interior Ministry put the death toll of the fire at 82, with 110 injured. On Sunday Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qazimi suspended the country’s health minister and Baghdad governor and they are being investigated.
