20 August 2020

Russia and Syria have agreed to transfer additional territory and water area to expand the Khmeimim airbase.

The Protocol to the agreement on the deployment of the Russian military was published on the official portal of legal information. Moscow signed it on July 30, and Damascus - on July 21.

It is about an area of eight hectares in the province of Latakia: the parties agreed to deploy a medical rehabilitation center of the Russian aviation group there.

Earlier, President Vladimir Putin instructed to hold talks with Damascus on expanding the territories of bases in Syria.

The Russian air force aviation group has been based at Khmeimim airport since 2015, when the Russian military began taking part in combat operations against terrorists in the region.
