Russian charities have handed over a large batch of medical aid to Syria to fight the coronavirus pandemic, according to a statement by the SAR Ministry of Health.
"The Ministry of Health has received medical assistance from the charity foundation RUSSAR and the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society to support efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic," the statement said.
The Ministry of Health noted that the assistance was delivered in a very timely manner as the Syrian health sector is experiencing difficulties in importing medicines and medical supplies due to unilateral sanctions from the US and Western countries.
In addition to medicines and medical materials, Russia has transferred personal protective equipment for medical personnel and thermometers to the SAR.
In early July, Deputy Minister of Health of the SAR Ahmad Kleifavi told in an interview with RIA Novosti about Damascus' request from Moscow for a list of medicines to combat the coronavirus, noting that the new US sanctions have further increased pressure on the health sector, which complicates the already difficult process of supplying medicines and essential equipment.
To date, 561 cases of infection with COVID-19 have been officially registered in Syria. Of those, 165 have recovered and 32 died.
