Russia is interested in Iran overcoming the consequences of the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy and will seek to help resolve the issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday at the third meeting of the Russia-Azerbaijan Expert Council.
"We also work together with Azerbaijan in other regional formats, in particular, a trilateral format at the highest level Russia - Azerbaijan - Iran has been created quite a long time ago and successfully functioned, at least until pre-covid. We think it also has a good future," he said.
"We are now interested in our Iranian colleagues taking the necessary measures to overcome the consequences of the bloody attack on the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission, and we will try to help resolve this issue," Lavrov noted.
On January 27, the Azerbaijani foreign ministry reported an armed attack on its embassy in Tehran, killing the diplomatic mission's head of security and wounding two of his colleagues. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev condemned the armed attack, describing it as a terrorist act and demanding its immediate investigation and punishment of the perpetrators. On January 29, employees of the country's embassy in Tehran and their family members - a total of 53 people - were evacuated to Baku. Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov told reporters that the embassy completely suspended diplomatic activities, but the consulate general in Tabriz continues to operate normally.
