Moscow has strongly condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau. Andrei Nastasin, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department, expressed this stance at a recent briefing.
"We strongly condemn the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, which resulted from a missile attack on his residence in Tehran," Nastasin stated. He highlighted concerns that the organizers of the assassination were aware of the potential repercussions for the region.
Nastasin pointed out that the attack occurred during Haniyeh's visit to Tehran, where he was attending the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian. He warned that the assassination could significantly impact ongoing indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, which were aimed at establishing ceasefire terms for the Gaza Strip.
The Russian diplomat urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the security situation and lead to a large-scale armed confrontation.
