Russian and Chinese Leaders to Meet at SCO and BRICS Summits in 2024

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in June and the BRICS summit in October 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov siad at a press conference following discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

 

"We discussed the upcoming meetings of our leaders on the margins of various international events, including the BRICS summit in Kazan this October and the SCO summit in my Astana in June. There will surely be other opportunities to maintain regular political dialogue," Lavrov said.

 

During the talks, special emphasis was placed on the schedule of high-level contacts, as Lavrov highlighted that "leaders' diplomacy is a central element of the Russia-China comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction." He noted that "it is thanks to the leaders' diplomacy that bilateral relations have reached an unprecedentedly high level and continue to develop dynamically amid a very difficult situation in the world."

 

Lavrov also mentioned that discussions included contacts through the foreign ministry, and a plan for regular consultations was recently signed. He added, "We briefly touched upon certain issues of intergovernmental cooperation in practical areas. This set of tasks will be considered more substantially during the upcoming five intergovernmental commissions this year."

 

Lavrov is on an official visit to Beijing from April 8-9.
