Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi confirmed mutual intentions to continue efforts for direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following Thursday's telephone conversation between the two sides.

The foreign ministers of the two countries discussed the regional agenda with a focus on the situation in East Jerusalem and around the Gaza Strip.

"The ministers confirmed mutual determination to continue efforts to organize direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, and noted the importance of the efforts of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators," the diplomatic office informed.

Smolensk Square also noted that Lavrov and al-Safadi expressed concern over the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. "Deep concern was expressed over the escalation of tensions in the Palestinian territories and the need for an immediate ceasefire and transfer of the situation to a political channel was stressed," the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
