Russian Delegation to UN Accuses Western Powers of Controlling ICC's 'Pseudo-Justice'

30 January

Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Maria Zabolotskaya has accused the West of wielding the "pseudo-justice" of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. She claimed that the "on and off" switch for this pseudo-justice is in the hands of Western powers.

"As we have consistently highlighted, the pseudo-justice of the ICC operates like a remote control with an on and off button. Currently, the control is held by Western custodians. We are witnessing this in Gaza, where the ICC is demonstrating selective blindness towards a situation that has been under its purview since 2015," she stated during a UN Security Council meeting.

On January 18, Mexico and Chile petitioned the ICC to initiate an investigation into the crimes being perpetrated in Palestine. The Mexican Foreign Ministry's statement indicated that the ICC's intervention is particularly pertinent due to UN reports of numerous incidents that may constitute crimes falling under the ICC's jurisdiction under the Rome Statute.

Since January 16, 2015, the ICC Prosecutor's Office has been conducting a preliminary examination of the situation in Palestine. In May 2018, Palestine submitted a request to the Prosecutor's Office for a comprehensive examination of the situation. The document requested an investigation into the crimes under the court's jurisdiction committed in the territory of the State of Palestine since June 13, 2014.

In December 2019, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda declared that following the Palestinian request, the Prosecutor's Office had completed a preliminary examination and concluded that the situation met all the Rome Statute criteria for opening a full investigation into Israeli actions in the Palestinian territories.
