Russian Diplomat Criticizes Western Human Rights Violations in Counter-Terrorism Efforts

16 February

Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Maria Zabolotskaya, has criticized Western countries for their human rights violations during counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Zabolotskaya made these remarks on Thursday, pointing out the hypocrisy of Western states' claims about protecting human rights while conducting military operations.

"Despite Western states' rhetoric about the importance of protecting human rights in counter-terrorism measures, we must not overlook the severe human rights violations committed during their operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Syria, and the prolonged presence of French military forces in the Sahel," stated Zabolotskaya.

She highlighted the discrepancy between Western countries' professed concern for human rights and the term "collateral damage" often used to justify civilian casualties resulting from airstrikes and targeted attacks on alleged terrorists. Zabolotskaya also raised concerns about the existence of secret CIA prisons, including those in European Union countries, as well as reports of inhumane conditions and torture in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Furthermore, Zabolotskaya mentioned instances where Western military personnel "recorded acts of torture on cell phones, to boast to friends and relatives."
