Russian Foreign Ministry Calls for Middle Eastern Countries to Combat Misinformation

23 October 2023

Amid the escalating Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Artur Lyukmanov, Director of the Department of International Information Security at the Russian Foreign Ministry and Presidential Special Representative for International Cooperation in the Field of Information Security, stressed the potential for Middle Eastern nations to collaborate in countering the spread of false information.

"Returning to the topic of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, we see that the information space is overflowing with harsh assessments. We believe that the states of the Middle East could take a step towards each other in order to prevent and stop the spread of false information," he stated.

Lyukmanov also highlighted the role of false information in radicalizing public sentiments, stating, "The dissemination of such information harms not only efforts in terms of information security but also efforts to preserve peace in general."

"The efforts we are making in contacts with states and on the UN platform are aimed at providing a direct link between the competent agencies of states to counter the spread of extremist information," the diplomat concluded.
