Russian MFA: Biden Failed to Fulfill Promises to Rejoin Iran Nuclear Deal

29 August

US President Joe Biden has failed to follow through on his promises to bring the United States back into the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) concerning Iran's nuclear program, with Washington now abandoning negotiations on the matter. This was highlighted in a statement issued by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

"Recently, a US State Department official mentioned that the Biden administration 'still' sees a negotiated solution as the best way to contain Iran's nuclear capabilities. However, due to Tehran's lack of proper cooperation with the IAEA and certain escalatory steps, diplomatic efforts have been rendered impossible," Zakharova said. "In other words, Washington has abandoned negotiations and made it clear that it has no intention of implementing the agreements outlined in the JCPOA and endorsed by UNSC Resolution 2231."

Zakharova criticized the Biden administration, stating, "The Biden administration has once again demonstrated its inability to fulfill its campaign promises to rejoin the JCPOA, promises that were instrumental in Biden's election to the White House."

She also noted that the current US administration has continued the policies of former President Donald Trump, leading to the collapse of the nuclear deal and the undermining of UN Security Council Resolution 2231. "Following Washington's poor example, European countries have also openly violated this resolution," Zakharova added. "As usual, this lawlessness is accompanied by harsh rhetoric against Tehran, with unfounded and absurd accusations, aimed solely at justifying their actions and creating a strong impression within the international community of a nuclear threat from Iran, which they claim must be addressed by any means necessary."

Zakharova concluded by reaffirming Russia's position: "We firmly believe that UNSC Resolution 2231 remains in force and must be implemented by all parties to the nuclear deal, including the US, UK, Germany, and France. These countries are obligated to rectify their violations and align their policies with the Security Council's requirements. There is no other legal way forward, and they should not waste time with empty complaints about Iran's nuclear program."
