Russian MFA Outraged by Israeli Strikes on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

11 October

Russia has expressed its indignation over Israel's attacks on UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) facilities, urging Israel to refrain from such hostile actions, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“Moscow is outraged by the actions of the Israeli military. The Russian side demands an end to all hostile activities against UNIFIL peacekeepers, who are carrying out their mission in Lebanon in accordance with the UN Security Council mandate. We express our support and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement read.

On October 10, two UN soldiers were injured after an Israeli Merkava tank fired on a UNIFIL observation tower along the Tyre-En-Naqoura highway, near a Lebanese army post. In addition, Israeli forces shelled the entrance to a bunker in the El-Labbouneh area where peacekeepers were sheltering. Patrol vehicles were damaged, and the electrical and communication systems were knocked out of service.

In a statement from the UNIFIL press office, it was emphasized that “any deliberate attack on peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”
