Russian MFA: situation in Sudan has been ignored by transitional authorities for last two years

25 October 2021

The people of Sudan can and must solve their internal problems on their own, and Russia will respect their choice and is ready to assist the Sudanese, if necessary. This was stated in a comment by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Monday.

"We are convinced that the Sudanese can and must independently solve domestic problems and determine the vector of their country's sovereign development based on national interests. The Russian Federation will continue to respect the choice of the friendly Sudanese people and provide them with all necessary assistance," the comment said.

Zakharova noted that the development of events in the African country was evidence of "an acute systemic crisis that has engulfed all areas of political and economic life in the country." "This is the natural result of the failed policy that has been pursued over the past two years. The despair and the plight of the vast majority of the population have been virtually ignored by the transitional authorities and their foreign patrons and advisers," she added.

The official representative of the Russian foreign ministry stressed that due to foreign interference in the internal affairs of the republic, Sudanese citizens have lost confidence in the transitional authorities. "[This] has repeatedly resulted in numerous protests and provoked general instability in the country, including the de facto separation of a number of its regions," she recalled.

After weeks of protests, the Sudanese military on Monday night arrested the country's civilian prime minister, Abdallah Hamdok, as well as a number of top officials and prominent politicians. The country's leader, general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as the army's "response to the youth revolution," dissolved the highest authorities and declared a state of emergency. He also suspended several articles of the constitutional declaration which had provided the framework for the country's transition after the overthrow of the 30-year-old presidency of Omar al-Bashir and the relationship between the military and civilian authorities.
