Russian MFA stresses role of Astana format in consultations with Turkey, Syria, Iran

The Russian side during a series of consultations with diplomats from Turkey, Syria, and Iran on April 3 stressed the importance of continuing targeted efforts to promote the settlement of the situation in and around Syria, and also emphasized the leading role of the Astana format. The Russian foreign ministry said in a statement published on Wednesday.


The ministry said that Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held a series of consultations on Monday with Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Hadji, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Ayman Susan and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Burak Akcapar.


"The Russian side stressed the importance of continuing targeted efforts to promote a comprehensive settlement of the situation in and around the Syrian Arab Republic on the basis of commitment to the principles of respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the country. The leading role of the Astana format, which has proved its effectiveness, was also emphasized," the foreign ministry said.


The ministry noted that during the talks special attention was paid to practical issues related to the preparation of a quadrilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Syria and Turkey, dedicated to the normalization of Syrian-Turkish relations.
