Russian MFA: Taliban are having initial progress in the fight against terrorist groups

15 February 2022

The Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) already has positive results in the fight against terrorist groups on the territory of Afghanistan, Oleg Syromolotov, RF Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, told TASS.

The deputy minister pointed out that Russia notes the efforts of the new Afghan authorities to maintain military and political stability and security, as well as to improve the socio-economic situation in the country.

"In contacts with the new regime, we draw its attention to the importance of combating terrorist and drug threats emanating from Afghan territory. The Taliban authorities already have positive results in the fight against terrorist groups on the territory of Afghanistan. Particularly, in January 2022, the former leader of the Afghan terrorist cell ISIS (old name of the terrorist group Islamic State banned in the Russian Federation - TASS) Farooqi was liquidated and also a number of members of the Hizb-ut-Tahrir terrorist organization (banned in Russia) in Takhar province was arrested. And on February 6, 2022, in the eastern province of Nangarhar, at least 50 ISIS members surrendered to the Taliban," the Russian deputy foreign minister said.

"We hope that the new authorities will continue to counteract the activation of terrorists in Afghanistan," he added.

Syromolotov stressed that Russia, for its part, is ready to assist in building up regional efforts to strengthen security through multilateral mechanisms such as the SCO, CSTO and CIS.

After the announcement by the United States in the spring of 2021 of the decision to withdraw their armed forces from Afghanistan, the Taliban began a large-scale operation to take control of the country. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without any fighting, and President Ashraf Ghani left the country. On September 6, the Taliban claimed control over the entire Afghan territory and on September 7, they announced the composition of the provisional government, the legitimacy of which has not yet been recognized by any country.
