Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy emphasized that the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) decision to vote against the draft Middle East resolution proposed by the United States clearly demonstrates which option is genuinely aimed at establishing peace in the region.
The UN Security Council recently conducted a vote on both the American and Russian drafts of the Middle East resolution. While the Russian version did not receive sufficient votes, Russia and China vetoed the US draft. Notably, the UAE also voted against the US proposal.
"A significant moment during today's Security Council vote on the US and Russian resolutions regarding the Gaza situation. Notably, China cast its vote against the US draft and in favor of the Russian proposal, as did the UAE, representing the Arab bloc within the UNSC. This speaks volumes about which draft is genuinely oriented towards peace in the region," Polyanskiy stated in his Telegram channel.
"In the Security Council today, a choice was made between the American draft, which could potentially permit Israel to target more Palestinian civilians and conduct a ground operation in Gaza, and the Russian draft, which calls for an immediate ceasefire," - continued the Russian diplomat on the social network X (formerly Twitter). - "Both drafts condemned the actions of Hamas on October 7, but the US draft overlooked Israel's violation of international humanitarian law concerning Gaza's civilians. Therefore, when the US and its allies express sorrow over the children's lives lost in Gaza, don't be misled – their actions indicate otherwise."
After the meeting, US Deputy Permanent Representative Robert Wood told reporters that adopting the US draft was "probably the only way to pass a good, balanced resolution in the UN Security Council."
The disapproved US draft contains a condemnation of the Hamas attack on Israel, a call for the release of hostages and respect for international humanitarian law. It does not call for a cease-fire but recognizes the right of countries to defend themselves.
