11 December 2020

Russian citizens Maxim Shugaley and Samer Hassan Ali Swayfan, detained a year and a half ago in Libya and released on Thursday, have returned to Russia. This was reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday.

"Welcome home! Maxim Shugaley and Samer Swayfan on their native land," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a Twitter post.

Employees of the National Values Protection Foundation Shugaley and Swayfan were detained in Libya in May 2019. The government attorney general's office in Tripoli accused them, among other things, of interfering in internal affairs and elections in Libya, conducting public work in the country without the permission of local authorities and security bodies. In addition, according to the prosecutor's office, the Russians traveled to places they were not allowed to visit.
