The summit of the heads of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states in Samarkand, amid the current high turbulence in the world, will serve to achieve a consensus among the leaders of the countries on the regional and international situation, further development of the SCO and cooperation within the organization, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming told TASS on Friday.

"The summit of SCO heads of state is a good platform to exchange views and reach consensus among the leaders of the countries on the regional and international situation, further development of the SCO, as well as cooperation of member states within the organization," Zhang Ming said.

As the current SCO chairing country, Uzbekistan has put forward numerous proposals on the agenda of the Samarkand summit in the areas of politics, security, economy, transport and communications, humanitarian cooperation and others, he reminded. Currently, all sides are holding active consultations on these issues.

Zhang Min also said that comprehensive preparations for the upcoming summit of the heads of states have been made at a recent meeting of the Council of SCO Foreign Ministers, and a plan to implement the Agreement on long-term neighborliness, friendship and cooperation of state members of the SCO, as well as draft documents on development of interconnection, response to climate change and a number of other documents to be submitted for consideration at the summit of heads of states have been adopted.

During the meeting the ministers of foreign affairs confirmed the important role the organization plays in strengthening of strategic mutual trust among the member states, promotion of regional development, deepening of ties among nations and other aspects. The foreign ministers also pointed to the need to strengthen cohesion within the organization, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, increase the level of regional interconnectedness, strengthen cooperation in humanitarian exchanges, and advance the organization's expansion process in an orderly manner.

"I think the SCO member states will use the September summit in Samarkand as an opportunity to further exchange views on the aforementioned issues and find consensus and solutions," Zhang Ming concluded.
