31 October 2023

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud expressed his appreciation to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, for Russia's support of the UN General Assembly resolution advocating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that during a telephone conversation with Lavrov, Prince Faisal "expressed his gratitude for Russia's support for the UN resolution that seeks an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of an urgent humanitarian truce in the besieged Gaza Strip."

Furthermore, the agency noted that both ministers stressed the importance of the international community's role in achieving an immediate ceasefire, safeguarding civilians, and working towards a fair and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue.

Prior to this, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the foreign ministers of both countries had discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and explored avenues for cooperation in the BRICS format. This conversation took place in the context of the decision made at the XV BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, where it was agreed to invite new members to join the association.

On October 27, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which was drafted by a group of Arab states and submitted by Jordan. The resolution was supported by 120 countries, with 14 against and 45 abstentions. An amendment proposed by Canada, which aimed to condemn Hamas, did not receive sufficient votes.

This resolution comprises 14 points, with the first point emphasizing the need for an immediate humanitarian truce. The text also includes demands for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, provide the Gaza Strip with essential supplies without delay, release all civilians, ensure unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and call on Israeli authorities to rescind their order to move the Palestinian population and UN personnel to the southern part of the enclave.
