As reported by the Senegalese APS, the president has directed the justice minister to take immediate actions to restore tranquility and initiate a national dialogue in preparation for the upcoming presidential elections.
The details surrounding the reconciliation process have not been disclosed in the official communiqué, but the move comes amidst a contentious political climate. On February 3, President Sall postponed the presidential election due to concerns over candidate eligibility, specifically regarding the candidacy of Karim Wade, who was disqualified due to his dual citizenship. This decision followed a request from the Senegalese Democratic Party and subsequent investigations into allegations of corruption among the constitutional council members responsible for vetting candidates.
The postponement of the presidential election from February 25 to December 15 was approved by Senegal's parliament, extending the term of the incumbent president, which was originally set to expire on April 2. The parliamentary debate was marked by violent protests from opposition members, with some opposition factions supporting the government's decision to maintain stability.
On February 8, the Nigeria-based Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Mediation and Security Council is slated to convene a ministerial-level meeting to discuss the situation in Senegal in Abuja.
