Syria, in response to Tunisia's decision to appoint an ambassador to Damascus, has decided to reopen its diplomatic mission in that country and to send an ambassador there in the coming years. The two states said in a joint statement issued Wednesday.
"In response to the initiative of Tunisian President Kais Saied to appoint an ambassador to the Syrian Arab Republic, the Syrian government announced its immediate approval of the appointment and decided to open a Syrian embassy in Tunis and to appoint an ambassador in the coming years," SANA news agency quoted an extract from the statement. It stressed that consultations between the foreign ministers of the two countries to "restore Syrian-Tunisian relations" continue.
Tunisia severed diplomatic relations with Syria shortly after the outbreak of armed conflict in that country about 10 years ago. In February of this year, the Tunisian president announced a decision to raise the level of diplomatic representation in Damascus and appoint an ambassador.
