Tokayev: the high turnout at the referendum in Kazakhstan was an indicator of maturity of society

The high turnout at the referendum on constitutional amendments held in Kazakhstan on June 5 was an indicator of the maturity of society, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Monday in his address to the nation.


"The referendum was an important milestone in the history of our country and showed the cohesion and readiness of the nation for real change. The high turnout was a testament to the maturity and responsibility of our society. I thank everyone who came to the polls and supported the reforms started in the country," Tokayev said.


According to him, changes to the basic law are not the final stage, but only the beginning of reforms. "We will continue a comprehensive modernization of the country. Based on the updated constitution, we will form a more effective model for the functioning of all institutions of power, and strengthen the mechanisms of checks and balances between them," the president of Kazakhstan explained.


On Sunday, a referendum on constitutional amendments was held in Kazakhstan. According to them, the powers of the head of state and the role of parliament and local representative bodies are being considerably strengthened; the human rights protection sphere is being systematically strengthened; the Constitutional Court is being re-established; the final abolition of the death penalty is being fixed; and the status of the country's first President Nursultan Nazarbayev is being excluded.


According to preliminary data of the Central Referendum Commission, 77.18% of citizens voted for the amendments to the Constitution and the turnout was 68.06%. The plebiscite is considered valid as the turnout exceeded the 50% threshold. The referendum is considered valid, as the turnout exceeded the 50% threshold. Amendments to the basic law are considered adopted if more than half of citizens in no less than 12 out of 17 regions of Kazakhstan (14 regions and three cities of republican significance - Nur-Sultan, Almaty and Shymkent) voted for them.
