Turkey counts on grain deal prolongation

06 October 2022

Turkish authorities expect to extend the "food deal" that was concluded in Istanbul on July 22 for 120 days, Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Vahit Kirisci said Thursday.

"We very much hope that the grain agreement will be extended," he told TRT.

According to the minister, since August 1, when the "food deal" was launched, 271 ships left Ukrainian ports and 6.2 million tons of agricultural products were exported through the sea humanitarian corridor.

Kirisci also said that thanks to the grain exports from Ukraine, wheat prices fell by 25 percent. "The deal had a psychological effect," he said.

On July 22, a package of documents aimed at solving the problem of food and fertilizer supplies to the world markets was signed in Istanbul. One of the agreements regulates the order of grain export from the Kiev-controlled Black Sea ports. The Joint coordination center established by Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the UN in Istanbul is designed to inspect vessels with grain in order to prevent arms smuggling and exclude provocations.
