Turkey discovered large reserves of natural gas in the Black sea and will start using it by 2023, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday, whose speech is broadcast by NTV.

"This is a historic event. We have discovered the largest natural gas field in the country's history in the Black sea. The volume is 320 billion cubic meters. By 2023, we plan to supply it to our citizens," he said.

Exploration at sea since July 20 was conducted by the drilling vessel "Fatih", the field was discovered at the well "Tuna-1".

According to Erdogan, the discovery of this field means that "there is a high probability that there are other gas deposits in this area". "This discovery is extremely important from the point of view of our country's energy independence. Until then, we were completely dependent on energy supplies from abroad, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on this. But in 2017, we updated our energy strategy and expanded our fleet of research and drilling vessels, " he said.

In the near future, Erdogan said, the authorities would resolve technical issues related to gas production from this field, and "immediately start drilling."
