Turkish Foreign Ministry considers trilateral meeting on Syria in Moscow useful

29 December 2022

The trilateral meeting on Syria, which was held on December 28 in Moscow, was useful in terms of reaching a compromise on the road map for resolving the situation, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters on Thursday.

"I can say that it was a useful meeting. We believe that contacts with the regime [the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad] are important for achieving a lasting peace and a political solution. And such interaction is important in terms of reaching a compromise between the regime and the moderate [Syrian] opposition," Hürriyet quoted the minister as saying.

Cavusoglu noted that "a meeting at the level of foreign ministers should be planned for the next stage." "A specific date for such a meeting has not been worked out yet. And there is no clear date for similar talks between the leaders either. But January is still very early for such a meeting, and even for our [foreign minister-level] talks, too," the minister said.

At the same time, Cavusoglu noted that Ankara "will continue to fight resolutely against terrorism in Syria." "Our current interaction with the [Syrian] regime, direct and indirect contacts with it will not prevent us from continuing this fight," he pointed out.

The Turkish and Syrian defense ministers met in Moscow on December 28 for the first time in 11 years. The meeting was held in a trilateral format with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. As a result, it was decided to continue contacts in this format.
