UAE to Host 1,000 Children from Gaza Strip for Medical Care

02 November 2023

President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the reception of 1,000 Palestinian children from the Gaza Strip in the country to provide them with medical care. This directive was reported by the Emirati news agency WAM.

It is envisaged that children from the Palestinian enclave who have suffered during the hostilities will be able to undergo the necessary course of medical treatment or rehabilitation in state medical institutions, accompanied by their relatives. According to the agency, the UAE president discussed this initiative with the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric.

The agency did not specify how these children and their accompanying family members will be able to leave the blockaded enclave. As of now, the only connection to the outside world for the Gaza Strip is provided by the Rafah border crossing, situated on the border with Egypt. On November 1, the authorities of the Arab Republic announced the opening of the crossing to allow approximately 90 wounded Palestinians and around 450 foreigners and individuals with dual citizenship to pass through. In response, Hamas published a list of foreigners permitted to leave the enclave. This list includes citizens of Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Bulgaria, as well as ICRC staff.
