African representation in the permanent membership of the UN Security Council is a necessity, Leonardo Santos Simao, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, told TASS.
"Including Africa is a must," - he stated. - "It is a necessity. So that Africa as a permanent member of the Security Council, as well as others, can express its opinion on this issue (UN reform - TASS note)."
Simao noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is actively working towards reforming the world organization. "The efforts of the secretary-general are focused on two aspects. The first is the need to reform the UN security system, with several UN member states making arguments in favor of updating the agreement adopted in 1945, as the world has undergone significant demographic, economic, and political changes since then," he explained.
"Thus, the reasons that led to the current arrangement have already been overcome by events and time," - Simao concluded. - "So it is natural to adapt."
