UN Security Council Backs Guterres After He Is Declared Persona Non Grata by Israel

04 October

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed full support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres following Israel's decision to declare him persona non grata. The Council emphasized the need for all nations to refrain from any actions that could undermine his work.

"Members of the Security Council reaffirmed their full support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his crucial role," the UNSC said in a statement distributed to the press. "They stressed the importance for all member states to build productive and effective relations with the Secretary-General and to avoid any actions that undermine his work or that of his office."

The statement further highlighted that any decision to refuse cooperation with the UN Secretary-General is "counterproductive, especially in the context of escalating tensions in the Middle East."

On October 2, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz banned Guterres from entering the country and declared him persona non grata, citing the Secretary-General's failure to condemn Iran's attack on Israel.
