State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during his official visit to Tehran. At the meeting, the politicians discussed the development of relations between the two countries, the press service of the State Duma said Monday.
"Vyacheslav Volodin and Ebrahim Raisi discussed the development of relations between the two countries. <...> Volodin conveyed him [Raisi] words of greetings and warm wishes from Russian President Vladimir Putin," the report said.
During the meeting, Volodin said that Russia and Iran stand for the formation of a just world order and ensuring global and regional security. According to him, "Western dictatorship can only be opposed to the freedom of the development of countries and peoples." "In this regard, preserving sovereignty and independence is of key importance for the two states," Volodin stressed.
The speaker of the State Duma is in the Iranian capital on an official visit. He arrived in Tehran heading a State Duma delegation on Sunday. The Russian delegation includes Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Sergei Neverov, who supervises the chamber's interparliamentary ties with Iran, LDPR leader and Head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky, and Chairmen of the Duma Committees on the Financial Market Anatoly Aksakov, on Security and Anti-Corruption Action Vasily Piskarev and on Transportation Yevgeny Moskvichev.
During his visit, Volodin held talks with Chairman of the Islamic Council of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. In addition, the third meeting of the commission on cooperation between the State Duma and the Parliament of Iran was held.
Earlier in January, Putin had a telephone conversation with Raisi. As the Kremlin press service noted, the two presidents discussed further building up the whole range of bilateral cooperation. In particular, they spoke in favor of consistent implementation of mutually beneficial projects in the energy and transport and logistics spheres. The previous telephone conversation between Putin and Raisi took place in November, they also devoted much attention to bilateral cooperation. In September, the presidents met on the margins of the SCO summit in Samarkand. In July 2022, Putin visited Tehran to participate in a trilateral meeting of the heads of state guarantors of the Astana process to facilitate a Syrian settlement.
