Zakharova: Declaring Guterres Persona Non Grata Won't Aid Peace

03 October

Declaring UN Secretary-General António Guterres persona non grata by Israel is the country's sovereign right, but it will not contribute to peace, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova in comments to RTVI.

Zakharova acknowledged that declaring someone persona non grata is within a country's sovereign rights. However, she emphasized, “This will not help the cause of peace.” She added that the true fault for the situation and the UN's inability to speak out lies with Washington, which has blocked several UN Security Council resolutions and undermined diplomatic efforts with its heavy-handed actions.

On October 2, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz barred Guterres from entering Israel and declared him persona non grata, citing the UN chief's failure to condemn Iran's recent attack.
